There’s something about the Yamaha MT-125 that makes you look twice. Maybe it’s the aggressive front end, the muscular tank or simply the fact that it looks like a much bigger bike than it actually is.
Whatever it is, Yamaha has done a pretty good job of making a 125cc motorcycle feel like something special.
The MT-125 has always been one of those bikes that stands out in the learner market, and the 2027 model keeps that unmistakable streetfighter attitude. It’s sharp, modern and takes plenty of inspiration from its bigger brothers in the MT range.
But there’s more to this bike than just good looks.
First Impressions – It Doesn’t Look Like a 125
Let’s be fair, some 125s look exactly like what they are: small, practical motorcycles built to get you from A to B.
The MT-125 is a little different.
From the front, you’ve got that distinctive LED lighting setup that gives it an almost angry expression. Add the muscular fuel tank, exposed frame and minimal bodywork, and you’ve got a bike that wouldn’t look out of place parked alongside much bigger machines.
And that’s a big part of its appeal.
If you’re 17 and buying your first proper geared motorcycle, you probably don’t want something that looks like a basic commuter. You want something you can be proud of when you pull up to meet your mates.
The MT-125 certainly ticks that box.

What’s It Like Underneath?
Of course, looking good is one thing. Having an engine that’s enjoyable to use is another.
The MT-125 uses a 125cc liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine producing 15 PS, putting it right at the power limit for the A1 licence category.
It’s also equipped with Yamaha’s Variable Valve Actuation system, or VVA for short.
Without getting too technical, this helps the engine deliver usable performance across the rev range rather than feeling like everything happens right at the top.
That’s particularly useful on a 125, where you’re naturally going to be working through the gears quite a bit.
Let’s not pretend it’s going to have superbike acceleration. It won’t. It’s still a 125.
But that’s not really the point.
The fun with smaller bikes is being able to use more of what they’ve got, whether you’re heading through town, riding to college or taking the longer way home just because you fancy it.
And with a six-speed gearbox, there’s plenty of opportunity to get comfortable changing gears and making the most of the engine.
Proper Big-Bike Features
One thing we really like about the MT-125 is that Yamaha hasn’t treated it like a basic bike just because it’s a 125.
You get upside-down front forks, a wide rear tyre and a sporty chassis setup that gives it the appearance of something more substantial.
There’s also traction control, which is a welcome addition, especially for newer riders.
Then you’ve got the assist and slipper clutch.
If you’re new to motorcycling, that might not mean much at first. Basically, it helps make the clutch lighter to operate and reduces the chance of the rear wheel becoming unsettled during aggressive downshifting.
It’s one of those features you might not think about much while riding, but it’s nice to know it’s there.

The Technology Is Pretty Impressive Too
Gone are the days when a small motorcycle meant a basic speedometer and not much else.
The MT-125 features a 5-inch TFT display, giving the cockpit a much more modern feel.
Smartphone connectivity is another useful addition, particularly if you’re planning to use the bike regularly.
It’s good to see features like these making their way onto smaller-capacity motorcycles.
After all, just because you’re riding a 125 doesn’t mean you should miss out on decent technology.
Would It Make a Good First Bike?
We reckon the MT-125 makes a lot of sense for someone who wants to get into motorcycling but doesn’t want to start on something boring.
It’s got the looks, competitive performance for the 125cc class and some genuinely useful features.
The upright riding position should also make it a practical choice for everyday use, whether that’s commuting to work, getting to college or heading out for a ride at the weekend.
There is one thing worth thinking about, though.
The MT-125 is a premium 125, and that generally means you’ll be paying more than you would for a basic commuter.
Insurance is another consideration, especially for younger riders. It’s definitely worth getting a few quotes before making your decision.
And while it might look like a bigger bike, you’ll still be dealing with the limitations of a 125cc engine, particularly on faster roads.
But for learning the ropes and having some fun along the way? It’s got a lot going for it.

Our Thoughts on the Yamaha MT-125
For us, the appeal of the MT-125 is pretty simple. It looks fantastic, comes packed with some impressive features and has the sort of styling that makes you want to get out and ride.
Yamaha has also given riders four great colour options for 2027, so there’s something to suit pretty much everyone’s taste.
Tech Black is perfect if you prefer that stealthy, understated look, while Icon Blue gives you the classic Yamaha styling that’s always been a favourite. Ice Storm brings something a little different with its modern grey finish, and Redline White is ideal if you fancy something a bit sportier and more eye-catching.
We think all four colours suit the MT-125 really well, although we’d have a hard time picking a favourite!
Is it the cheapest way to get into motorcycling? Definitely not.
Is it going to be the fastest thing on the road? Of course not. But that’s not what the MT-125 is about.
It’s about having a bike you’re proud to own, something that looks the part and makes even the daily commute a bit more enjoyable.
We think Yamaha has done a great job of giving the MT-125 that big-bike feel without losing what makes a 125 so appealing in the first place.
The price might put some people off, especially when there are cheaper alternatives out there, but if you’re after a sporty first bike with plenty of character, the MT-125 is definitely worth a look.
Would we have one? Absolutely. The only difficult part would be choosing which colour!
